Candles are burning at COB,O - Your faithful COB,O webmaster, Chris, lost his mom on Wednesday of this week. Chris will be away from his computer for a few days. In the interim, there will be no COB,O updates. I'm sure you all understand.

Old worlds keep closin' in
They have before
They will again
Voices call
Beyond the wind
Say we must go
Beyond the end

jbuffett.com is giving away 2 free tickets to the Las Vegas show. It's a nice gesture, but the site appears to be a front for a ticket agency, as well as nesting the GLC from the Son of a Son of a Webpage in frames.

Radio Margaritaville has added the following special broadcasts:

Happy First Anniversary to Radio Margaritaville and the Margaritaville Cafe, Orlando
March 4th is the historic date. Last year, it marked both the grand opening of the Margaritaville Cafe at Citywalk at Universal Studios Orlando and the day that Radio Margaritaville presented its first live Jimmy Buffett broadcast and began streaming audio 24 hours a day! So we'll celebrate on the RM airwaves by re-playing that incredible show with Jimmy and the Coral Reefer Band. There was an outdoor set from the balcony of the cafe, played to over 12,000 happy Parrotheads (tickets were distributed free of charge), followed by an exclusive indoor show for the lucky invitees. We'll include both sets in our concert replay on Tuesday (February 29) at 11am eastern, Thursday (March 2) at 5pm eastern and Saturday (March 4) at 11pm eastern, exactly one year after the blessed event.

John Hall and Friends Live from the Margaritaville Cafe
Founding member of Orleans and the "No Nukes" concerts, John Hall will play the Margaritaville Cafe in Orlando, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 22 & 23. The Wednesday night show, starting about 10:15 eastern time, will be broadcast live on Radio Margaritaville! Joining John will be Robbie Dupree (of "Steal Away" fame) and long-time Bonnie Raitt bass and tuba player, Freebo. Check John's site at www.sirensongs.com and Freebo's at www.freebo.com!

I've add a cool new way for you to recommend the CoB,O to your friends. Try it out!

Feb 20

I've received confirmation that Jimmy's videos will be released this spring.

Jimmy is listed one of Ticketmaster's most popular events. Thanks to Tim Poulton from Breda, The Netherlands, proving the CoB,O has truly gone global

The Washington Post has a good article on the history of Key West and tourism in How Low You Can Go. Thanks to Raleigh Warner

There is now a place for sober parrotheads to flock to! Check out Lucky Stars, a collective of sober parrotheads their experiences, strength and support while still having fun enjoying Jimmy's music and adventures; maybe even be a lighthouse to those still lost a sea.

Emilie was kind enough to type up the previously mentioned Lattitudes and Attitudes article and post it to alt.fan.jimmy-buffett:

Jimmy Buffett's Free Concert for Cruisers in St. Bart's
by Woody Henderson

I was off to see Jimmy Buffett in St. Bart's. Are you kidding: just me, a hand full of cruisers and Jimmy, piled onto a little quay under the same green hills where the Mic and Cher come for holiday? The occasion? A performance to honor the 50th anniversary of the infamous bar - Le Select.

There was nowhere to stay in St. Barts of course, so I had found a room in St. Maarten (via The Lonely Planet travel guide) that was near the two marinas where I was sure to find some obliging sailor to grant us portage to our final destination.

I finally arrived in Phillipsburg, St. Maarten. I was informed by my girlfriend, Holly, that my immediate assignment was to go find us a boat to St. Barts. As she lead me around the docks to talk to ever boater around to no avail, I continued to suggest we visit the bar to the response: "We don't have time for for drinks now Woody!" Now, though it's true that I value time spent in a quay-side Caribbean bar full of other sailing folk with a frosty dew laced pint of the local brew perched before me above most all other of lifes experiences, I have also learned that most significant sail oriented arrangements will inevitably take place in that very same environment. I hadn't even finished my first beer before we met Dennis, the proprietor of the 50' cat _Swalisa_ departing for St. Barts in one hour. I flashed Holly the "I told you so" look and she shot back with a "......*so*......".

The ride over was a bit bumpy, you know the sort - wind going one way, current going the other way - chop. It was nice to be out sailing in the Caribbean again though. St. Barts is very cool for a French island; tall and green and super clean. It was packed with a good sampling of cruisers and wayward island dwelling expats. We eased right in with a group of Latitudes & Attitudes friendly cruisers from St. Criox. After a couple of confidence creating cold Caribs, we were off to searc out Jimmy. We didn't find him of course, but we did speak with his assistant who told us Jimmy was really surprised to see this kind of turnout at a performance that was never advertised. I thought 'well.......duhhhhhh'.

We finally set up camp between the stage and the stern-to yachts. As the sun started to set and the people gathered around and the little town turned that warm golden color, I looked about and decided this was the perfect place to see Jimmy play. And play he did. For over three hours he played and played. There were songs that he played that I hadn't even heard before. It was like Moses coming back down from the mountains with a couple more commandments. These were lyrics I should know.

He thanked Le Select and brought some of the responsibles on stage. He thanked us cruiser types and everyone else who helps to pay for his outrageous lifestlye. He seemed to have most of his band with him. I wouldn't know for sure since I could never see the stage that well from the lame seats I'd usually get back in the U.S. But now I could see him perfectly. I remember thinking, 'so that's what he looks like'.

Seeing that Jimmy wasn't going to break soon, I walked back out of the crowd to take a break of my own. Even the lowly people in the back had a great view. The best view, althouh about a hundred feet aft, was afforded by the big, dare I say it, power boats stern-to on the quay-way, one of which Jimmy was using like a VIP trailer. He'd make his way through the crowd to the camper....errr, I mean power boat for a cold drink and cell phone call.

He finally tried to say goodnight to his loyal fans but the crown wasn't having any of it. We hadn't yet heard "Cheeseburger in Paradise" among others. After some chanting and the threat of burning Gustavia to the ground, Jimmy reappeared and appeased the delirious crowd. Some were so delirious that they were lying comatose along the fringes waiting for their less inebriated half to come along and pour them into the dinghy.

Jimmy finally signed off for the last time, made his way back to the big boat, waved to the crowd a couple times and sunk into a settee - job well done!

Trader Jon, owner of the famous aviation bar in Pensacola Florida died Saturday. The legendary bar has been mention by Jimmy on numerous occasions and is known around the world to Marine and Naval Aviators that have come to Pensacola to train for there wings. Thanks to Divetime1

Margaritaville has a new page Voyage of Courage.

Fingers passed along the following:

I caught word that I had won the weekly poll for favorite Coral Reefer, and just wanted to say thanks to everyone that voted for me. It really means a lot. I can't believe I beat out Amy Lee -- she's my favorite Coral Reefer.

I've had a couple of notes that the above projected tour dates and 2 leg tour are now not going to happen as I heard. I'm waiting to hear on definite dates to change them...

Unconfirmed tour date: June 6 at Virginia Beach (GTE Ampitheatre). Thanks to Rob

CNBC's stock market program Wednesday morning showed a profit chart for a company called "Buffets," to which one of the announcers reacted "Is that Buffetts? Is that Jimmy Buffett? Are these restaurants owned by Jimmy Buffett?" His partner responded "Maybe it's Warren Buffett." They finally acknowledged the correct spelling and pronunciation and admitted the company had nothing to do with Buffetts at all. Thanks to Mike DeGraba

According to Amusement Business, Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band was the sixth-highest-grossing touring act of the 1990s, taking in nearly $166.6 million and playing almost 400 shows.

LiveDaily covers Jimmy Buffett Sets Early Amphitheater Dates.

The Mobile Register reports Jimmy Buffett fans expected to gather in Mobile.

"Margaritaville" made the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's list of ten most overplayed songs:

10. "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett. This song is meant to be listened to while drunk. A few months ago, when this song came over the sound system in a bar, everyone starting singing -- no, yelling -- along. When a song becomes so ingrained that dozens of people can still remember the lyrics after tying one on you know it's time to give it a rest -- at least until it comes over the bar's sound system again just to please the die-hards.

Rumor from the Austin-American Statesman:

That's some Caribbean cruise Steve Hicks is planning for his 50th birthday later this month. I've heard that Elton John, Jimmy Buffett and the Beach Boys are among those slated to entertain Hicks and 100 of his closest friends on the Sea Goddess [a Seabourn Cruise Line ship]

[I think his brother is the owner of the Dallas Stars and the Texas Rangers. Steve Hicks was head of Austin's Capstar broadcasting Partners, which was the nation's largest broadcaster in mid-sized markets before being acquired last year by Chancellor Media Inc., now known as AMFM. Before that, he ran SFX Broadcasting Inc.] Thanks to Drew Warren

Dale Greer passed along the following:

Anchor Bay Entertainment has released the 1978 comedy FM on DVD. The movie, which has been cited as an inspiration for the TV series "WKRP in Cincinnati," features concert segments with Jimmy Buffett, Tom Petty and Linda Ronstadt. The DVD release includes a miniature replica of the movie's promo poster, as well as the original film trailer.

Yet another repackaging of Buffett's two Barnaby LPs, Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee, has been issued on CD. Called Jimmy Buffett: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times, the two-disc set is available as a Canadian Import on the Madacy label. CD Now has it for $9.99.

An anonymous email: Yesterday, stadium officials unofficially announced a Jimmy Buffett concert at Papa John's Stadium (Louisville, KY) for July 2000.

From About.com:

Avoiding Triggers: Jimmy Buffet[t] Tunes

I was so beat up and worn out from all my years of drinking I just felt like I was through with it! I know for me to drink again is as much as signing my death warrant. It just is not an option.

In all honesty though, there were a couple of times when I would see an add or hear ole' Jimmy Buffet[t] sing a tune and thoughts of the old days would cross my mind... just for a few seconds... then I would remember my last drunk. I would remember how I could no longer walk under my own power, how I would wake up after an hour or two of sleep and reach for the bottle to sooth my shaking hands and drown out those screeching demons in my head. And I would remember how afraid I was to live but too afraid to die!

Today those "triggers" are just another reminder of where I "don't" want to be. Whether having "one" glass of wine is good for the health of some is neither here nor there, it is not good for my health and I seriously doubt that I would "live longer". Thanks to Bob Robinson

The Late Late Show w/ Craig Kilborn just made a joke with Rudy Giuliani saying that at his Senate candidacy announcement, Rudy played "Why Don't We Get Drunk..." as opposed to "Captain Jack" featured in Hillary's recent announcement. Thanks to Derek Rollins

Those of you trying to locate MOM II with "Trouble on the Horizon" can look to BMG Music Service, which offers it for $2.99 this month. Thanks to Ted McMillen

Beach House on the Moon has been nominated for the favorite artist or group (rock) category in the Sixth Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. Other contenders are Phil Collins' Hits and Santana's Supernatural, tough competition. If you'd like to vote for Jimmy, you may do so online.

Jimmy Buffett Online has added two more full length shows: Mountain View 1993 and Poplar Creek IL 1981.

Allan Wells has received his Millenium Video:

It's officially titled "Jimmy Buffett's Millennium Bootleg Video." It arrived today in an envelope from HK Management. The video starts with shots from the party outside, then goes into the concert. It does include "Lord of the Millennium", so some of you may want to have your remotes handy. The video quality is pretty good; it was recorded from the screen video. They didn't re-mix the audio; it's better than the mix on Radio Margaritaville, but definitely not as good as broadcast concert TV show. We did get 2 tapes. So they honored the 1 for each ticket promise. Hopefully that's a good sign for the tickets.

From The Vault has been updated with "Bluebird of Happiness," a song from the 1960s on which Jimmy sings backup. Frankly this song makes "Poopi-Do" sound like a Grammy winner.

The Question of the Week has been updated.

In USA Today's History Piques Celebrity Curiosity: Singer/seadog Jimmy Buffet[t] would like to have been taught about pirate Jean Lafitte. Thanks to Pete Varos

According to USA Today, Jimmy donated $670 towards Hillary Clinton's New York senate compaign.

Jerry Jeff Walker Jams on Radio Margaritaville:

On Monday night, February 7, at approximately 11pm Pacific Time (2am Eastern!), Jerry Jeff Walker makes his first live appearance on RM. It's a benefit performance for The Dolphin Project, an organization founded by Rick O'Barry and Fred Neil that does admirable work regarding dolphins in captivity. Check them out at dolphinproject.org. This concert, to be held during a conference in Palm Springs, California, is sponsored by Not Harvard. It's traditionally a jam with various participants, and this year Not Harvard's Bill Goins lined up fellow Austin picker Jerry Jeff Walker and the Austin All Stars to anchor the musical festivities. If you're up, listen in!

Allan Wells passed along the following:

I purchased my millennium tickets through Universal's event office (not Ticketbastard). So, when I saw the post about the video being sent at the end of January, I thought "that's too easy...how do they even know where to send it?" I was very skeptical... well, I'm happy to report that I received a call yesterday from the Universal event office wanting my address to send the video.

According to the Hartford Courant, "there is only a 50/50 chance that Jimmy Buffett may be coming to the Meadows this summer". If he does, it will be in late August, tickets on sale next month. Thanks to jbuffett97@aol.com

Tentative dates for the summer tour legs are May 23 to June 24 and July 11 to September 4.

Jimmy Buffett Online has a couple new shows: 1974 Armed Forces Radio Show featuring Jimmy and the 1992 appearance of Jimmy and Jerry Jeff Walker on "The Texas Connection." Click on the "Special Items" section.

In the March-April issue of Latitudes & Attitudes is an article about the St. Barts concert and includes a few pictures (pages 110 & 111):

As the sun started to set and the people gathered around and the little town turned that warm golden color, I looked about and decided this was the perfect place to see Jimmy play. And play he did. For over three hours he played and played. There were songs that he played that I hadn't ever heard before. It was like Moses coming back down from the mountains with a couple more commandments. These were lyrics I should know. Thanks to Lori Palmer

Some more blurbs on the Alan Jackson duet:

(Launch) - Alan Jackson's current album, "Under the Influence," is made up of classic country songs that had an effect on the singer's life. With that in mind, it's no surprise to find tunes from country legends like Charley Pride, Gene Watson, Hank Williams Jr. and George Jones on the album. Fans might be surprised, however, to find Jackson singing a duet of "Margaritaville" with none other than Jimmy Buffett. "I think most people who are country fans grew up with that," Jackson said of the song. "Because that was a huge song. Anybody that's played a club or ever been to one, they've heard that song or sung along with it. And more than that, I think, a lot of people are Jimmy Buffett fans, which I am." Due to the two singers' hectic schedules, the two were never able to actually record together in the same studio. Jackson recorded his part in Nashville, Tenn., while Buffett did his part in New York. The two have spoken several times over the phone, but have yet to get together in person. Thanks to Marty Farrell

The Parrothead Web Ring has onsale dates for the west coast tour. San Francisco and Irvine shows go onsale on the 14th, others on the 12th.

Susan Super passed along the following:

The February 3, 2000 issue of Rolling Stone has a review of Alan Jackson's "Under the Influence" CD on page 62 which states:

"...he ends the record with a confident rendition of, yes, Jimmy Buffett's 'Margaritaville.' In his notes, Jackson says he admires Buffett for doing 'what he wants to do.'"

Also, the caption under Jackson's photo reads: "Jackson covers JimmyBuffett."

Derek Rollins contributed the following:

As a season ticket holder, I can report that at most games, the Dallas Stars play "Changes in Latitudes" as background music for an ad on the Diamondvision monitor. The ad pictures a parrothead-lookin' dude under a palm tree with a letter in a bottle. It's an ad for Dick's Last Resort, a local parrothead-phriendly bar in Dallas.

The latest Men's Journal has a segment on 6 Island get-a-ways. "Los Roques" mentions in the first sentence that this island was "...exactly how God and JimmyBuffett meant it to be." Thanks to Craig Lutman
