The March 15 issue of Rolling Stone contains the following from JB (thanks to Bob Robinson):

Old School Days
Jimmy Buffett
U. of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg, MS)
1966-1969

"I learned a few things in college, but I saw everybody else preparing for the rest of their life and thought, "Whatever these people are doing, I am not." By that time, I knew that I wasn't there to learn what I was going to do for the rest of my life. It was kind of like a jail sentence. I was broke, so I had to go to school where I really didn't want to go. Being near New Orleans was the most exciting thing. My band was the hot frat band for dances, and that was how I made my living. I was playing at all these parties, and every night was like Animal House. Then the hippie thing came along and I jumped into that like it was a mosh pit. The scene in New Orleans was still happening in those days: the Neville Brothers were playing in a club just down the street from me. I had a lot more fun on that end than I had in the classroom. When I got to graduation and I saw people go to job interviews at big firms, I thought. "Life is essentially over for these people, and I'm just getting started."

In the February 20 issue of the National Enquirer (p. 8) there is a full-page story about Captain Tony and his long-lost son Keith, who is a "Survivor 2" contestant. The article mentions that Jimmy Buffett was Capt. Tony's campaign manager when he was elected mayor of Key West. Thanks to Susan Super

The Palm Beach Post had this sobering report [thanks to Linda Most]:

POLICE BLOTTER

A Jimmy Buffett fan died Sunday morning after she was struck by a van while leaving Saturday's concert, Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies said. Just after 11 p.m. Saturday, Leela Nolte, 21, of Bonita Springs was run over as she walked along Sansbury Way, just outside the Mars Music Amphitheatre. The northbound van that hit her was driven by Kelly Patten, deputies said. Nolte was trapped under the van and had to be extricated. She was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. The van also hit Jason Pillifant, 25 of Miami. He was treated and released from Wellington Regional Medical Center.

Feb 22

Tonight's setlist and reviews (add your own) are available.

With the exception of a few stadium "special" concerts, Buffett has decided against the stadium shows. Instead, he allowed SFX to pick the top 10 venues in the cities he tours the most for concerts in the late summer/early fall. Thus, for example, Buffett will play in DC just one time in early September at the Nissan Pavillion in Bristow, VA. There will be no shows at Merriweather for the first time in quite awhile. JB supposedly didn't want to go through the hassle of putting on the stadium shows deciding to play just once in cities where he would normally play two or three times per stop.

A Corona rep in Phoenix mentioned there is a possibility of JB coming to Desert Sky in April; the rep's source at DS mentioned they're looking at a couple of dates... Thanks to Kate Lathrop

Preliminary development plans have been approved for Pier Park in Panama City Beach, FL. A Margaritaville will serve as an anchor for the retail/entertainment project, with groundbreaking set for next fall.

Jimmy is quoted in an article about the Napster division, Artists split on Napster decision.      Q: Did Jimmy Buffet make a statement after he was thrown out of his Miami Heat courtside seats for swearing at a ref?
A: Buffet said, and I quote, “Don’t know the reason I stayed here all season, with nothing to show but this brand-new tattoo. But it’s a real beauty, my head up my booty, how it got there I haven’t a clue.” Thanks to Guy Brierre

Buffett is mentioned in last Sunday's Arlo and Janis. Thanks to Jerry Shea

The current (March 2001) issue of Bon Appetit has a brief interview with Emeril Lagasse. The interviewer asked him who, past or present, he'd like to have as guests at his table. Emeril responded: "I'm a huge music fan, so there would be people like Don Henley, Sammy Hagar, Billy Joel, and Jimmy Buffett. And of course, I'd like Julia Child there. I would also like to have met Escoffier or Careme, so I'd invite them too." Thanks to Marc Feldesman

Feb 10

The setlist for tonight's show is available. Those who went to the show can post reviews. It was nice to hear both "Tryin' To Reason" and "Island," two CoB,O favorites.

New York parrotheads may have some good news: 2 August shows? Sounds like due to the past overwhelming demand for tickets as well as some "special guest" who is supposed to be supporting Jimmy, they have blocked out August 23 and 25. On sale is expected to be June 9 at 9AM. Main Jones Beach season goes onsale May 5 (not including Buffett show). A 4 ticket limit between the 2 shows is expected. Thanks to Matt

However, Milwaukee area fans may have some bad news according to Eric Youngquist: Alpine Valley Music Theater has been bought by the SFX entertainment combine. We generally begin our group sales ticket buying efforts at this time of year. However, when we made our first round of calls last week, SFX told us that they have 1) discontinued group sales for Alpine Valley this year and 2) they do not anticipate a Buffett tour this summer.

Betsy Brown sent in this update regarding tailgating parrotheads having fun and helping others: The Parrot Heads of Central Florida held a "Get Lei'd for Charity" PHundraiser during our tailgate party. Members of the club roller bladed, scootered, walked, and traveled on an ATV offering plastic leis for donations. While we lei'd a PHew of Orlando's PHinest for PHree along the way, by 4PM, we had reached our goal of $500 for Multiple Sclerosis. Our PHantastic Corona reps provided a great sign for our tailgate party location stating Parrot Heads of Central Florida Support Multiple Sclerosis Research, and we had people coming to us and putting money in our hands. We want to thank all of those 'nekkid necks' who donated for the cause. It was a great feeling for all involved, especially as one of our own members is in the early stages of MS. We definitely had the best tailgate party in the lot, with the junkatoo band visiting our location and we ended our event knowing we were 'partying with a purpose.'

Former CRB member "Fingers" Taylor will be appearing at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Blue Crab Music Festival on July 28th, 2001. Also appearing will be The Sauce Boss and Clarence Carter. Thanks to Bo Baber

Feb 9

The setlist for last night's show is available. Those who went to the show can post reviews.

Kevin Hooper passed this along: We passed thru Sangster International Airport (on the Montego Bay side of Jamaica) last Sunday and saw signs in the airport saying, "Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, coming soon." [Probably just a joke at the airport.]

Picture of a parrothead trying to free JB at a ballgame. Thanks to Raleigh Warner

Feb 8

Don't forget that the Orlando show will be broadcast live tonight on RadioMargaritaville.

JB crashed Mac's show last night, joining him for "If I Had a Boat" and 2 other tunes.

JB was interviewed by Channel 2 (video clip available) in Buffett Mellow Over Heat Altercation.

Feb 7

JB made an appearance on The Today Show this morning (video available). Jimmy said he was misquoted by the NY Post as to what he said at the Heat-Knock game. The Post reported he said "bull****", but Jimmy laughed and said it was much worse than that, and that he did apologize to Cameron for such language. [not like he never heard it before] Matt Lauer said his punishment/community service should be to go to the Today Show this summer for another concert outside the studio. Jimmy said he's working on the summer dates now... ESPN reported that he thought it was his "inalienable right." The South Florida Sentinel reported Photographers seated near Buffett along the east baseline heard Buffett say, "Hey Joe, make the f------ call." The Pilot-Online thinks that Overzealous ref may have Buffett Heat-ing up a song. Thanks to ALL who sent this in

Jeff Vrabel wrote an interesting column on being obsessed as a parrothead.

The Hampton Roads Daily Press reports that Parrotheads may get license plate: House approves tag for Buffett fans . Thanks to Chris Conner

On the February 4th episode of "Who wants to be a Millionaire", there was a question about Jimmy Buffett worth $16,000. Regis asked Captain Booker of the United States Army, the following:

What singer wrote the 1998 best selling book, "A Pirate looks at 50"?
    A. Jimmy Buffett
    B. Paul Simon
    C. Kris Kristofferson
    D. James Taylor
Captain Booker: "I've never heard of this book."
Regis: "Remember, you still have all your lifelines."
Captian Booker: "Well, Pirate usually connotates a sea faring type of image and I know one of these is usually associated with the beach, but 'm gonna go ahead and ask the audience."

54% of the Audience said Jimmy Buffett. He agreed and went on to leave with $32,000 when he got the $250,000 question wrong. Thanks to Jason Nicholson

In the new issue of Latitudes & Attitudes, there is a picture of Buffett in the Letters to the Editor section, page 30, from a Captain Mike Worley.

The Miami Herald has more on the JB-Miami Heat fiasco in Irked referee not singing to Buffett's tune.

In the seventh race at Laurel Race Park, in Maryland, on Sunday, the winner was Hemisphere Dancer. Paid $3.00 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Post position #1. Thanks to Mark Lucy

Jimmy was removed from his front row seat at the Miami Heat-New York Knicks game today for taunting/yelling/cursing at the refs. He was moved to an upper level seat for the remainder of the game. You can read about the details on ABC's site or ESPN's. By the way, the Knicks beat the Heat, 103-100 in OT. Thanks to ALL who sent this in

The Houston Chronicle faithful and dedicated Parrot Head Columnist Ken Hoffman strikes again. In Jimmy Buffett fans can test trivia skills , Ken writes details of a chance to win two "up close and personal" tickets to the Feb 15 concert on Feb 12, at a bookstore hosting a "Jimmy Buffett Triva Contest". Even the runner up prizes sound good, Buffett books, CDs, beer parties and PH stuff!!! Ken also asks a really good triva question: "In 1988, when Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band came to Houston and performed at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show, he changed the name of the band...for one night only. What was it.....?" Thanks to John

Feb 3

An anonymous source close to the Coral Reefer Band reports May to be full of Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays shows. June and July will be off months for JB and the CRB. Apparently, JB doesn't want to create and rehearse a new show and will stick with the previous format the rest of the year.

The March issue of Men's Health contains a Spring 2001 Style guide in which they give the top 100 essentials of Springtime style. #49 is a stylistic nod to the great Hawaiian shirt entitled, appropriately, "Parrot-Head Chic." Thanks to Terry Kenney

Betsy Brown passed this along:

We have just been informed by the 'powers that be' at the T.D.Waterhouse Centre in Orlando, that the main parking lots on the Livingston and Amelia sides, directly north and south of the venue, WILL NOT be opened for tailgating until after 4PM. There are two sold out Off Broadway shows at the Bob Carr Theatre that day, and they are holding spots open ONLY for those who show Les Miserables tickets OR have proof of working through the Expo Centre.

The ONLY lot available to set up for EARLY tailgating will be on the corner of Amelia and Parramore Street...the NORTHWEST corner of the venue center in the Orlando Centroplex. This lot will open at 8AM. The Parrot Heads of Central Florida will now be PHorced to find a NEW location for their tailgate party. All guests are welcomed at the event, but please check our website for updated information.
Another news item: MAC & FRIENDS at Margaritaville CityWalk. Mac McAnally and various friends will be performing Wednesday, February 7th, at Margaritaville at Universal CityWalk at 10PM. Ticket information is sketchy. We are now hearing ticket purchase is day of show only, but interested fans can check with Margaritaville at 407-224-2155 for more information. Note that this will be broadcast live on Radio Margaritaville!

The Pilot Online covers the recent attempt to get Virginia license plates of a parrothead theme in Parrotheads In Paradise. Thanks to Richie Prado
