Heard a Jimmy Buffett reference on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" on Tuesday, April 25. They were showing highlights of the San Francisco at Florida game and it was quite windy. Many of the fly balls were not so routine due to the wind blowing them around. Peter Gammons made the comment that they "were trying to reason with the hurricane season." Thanks to Craig Bursaw

The San Diego show will be broadcast live on Radio Margaritaville tonight at 11pm Eastern.

[Dale twisted my arm to post this :-) ] As Chris notes above, Buffett's music videos will be available for purchase on a compilation tape this summer. Although most of Bubba's music videos are pretty bad, there might just be a few gems on this set. According to the promo tease at Margaritaville, the tape will include some extremely rare videos released in 1974 (!), long before Duran Duran dubuted "Hungry Like the Wolf" on a nascent MTV. Among these "videos," which were actually shot on motion-picture film stock and screened as part of the coming attractions at ABC-owned movie theaters, is a nice treatment of Buffett's "Come Monday." The video was filmed in Key West and, if memory serves, features God's Own Pick-Up Truck, the beat-up blue Monroe County Glass & Mirror Co. vehicle shown in the gatefold to the original A1A album. It's ironic to note that, for all of Buffett's negative statements about "video kings," he was among the very first musicians in history to experiment with the format.

Also, don't miss your opportunity to win rare Buffett items like a copy of his Now Generation LP, "Come Together." All you have to do is answer two simple questions in the A1A Archives Trivia Contest. Other Prizes include a brand-new copy of Don Blanding's Floridays from the Peninsula Press. Surf on over to the A1A Archives home page and follow the links to to the trivia contest.

A minor step forward for the manatees:

Manatee group targets new boat slips
MAITLAND -- (AP) -- A federal judge has been asked to block any new boat docks and marinas in Florida coastal waters pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed to force federal agencies to do more to save Florida manatees from extinction.

The judge in Washington was asked to issue an emergency injunction banning the Army Corps of Engineers from issuing permits for boat slips and marinas.

The Save the Manatee Club, led by singer Jimmy Buffett, and a coalition of 17 other national environmental groups requested the injunction Tuesday.

If granted, it would cover marine facilities in 16 Florida counties and parts of three others, stretching around Florida's southern coast from Hillsborough to Brevard County, excluding Monroe County.

``All these areas are high-risk areas for manatees,'' said Judith Vallee, executive director of the Maitland-based Save the Manatee Club, which was started in 1981 by Buffett and then-Gov. Bob Graham.

``We are asking that no additional projects that can increase boat traffic be approved in the high-risk areas until the Corps can provide relief,'' Vallee said.

Manatees, also called sea cows, are slow-moving marine mammals that frequent warn coastal waters around Florida, sometimes straying up the East Coast or into Gulf of Mexico coastal waters.

An estimated 2,000 remain in Florida.

The coalition's latest action was prompted by news that a Naples developer was given permission to build 180 boat slips in a critical manatee area, said Eric Glitzenstein, a national spokesman for the coalition.

From Montgomery Alabama:

Sen. Jack Biddle hit a happy chord in the state Senate with his legislation to change the state song. The Senate approved Biddle's bill 32-1 Wednesday and sent it to the House for review. Biddle's legislation would switch "Alabama" from being the state song to being the state anthem. The version of "Stars Fell on Alabama" recorded by Jimmy Buffett, would become the state song, and "My Home's in Alabama" by the band Alabama would become the state ballad. Currently, there is no state anthem or state ballad. Biddle, R-Gardendale, said few people can sing "Alabama," but "wherever you go in the country, people know the tune to 'Stars Fell on Alabama."' If the bill passes the House, Gov. Don Siegelman has said he will sign it into law. [see previous news item] Thanks to Drew Warren

April 19

Jimmy Buffet Online has the Mountain View show available for those who missed it.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reviews Saturday's show in There's the tequila; where are the cheeseburgers in paradise? This is a pretty honest assessment of Jimmy's shows nowadays.

The San Diego Union-Tribune previews the upcoming shows in The Sun King. It's a rather good article, aside from a "Come Sunday" reference. Included is a quote from Jimmy that his next book of short stories will be out in September.

Larry Lee, featured on Jimmy's Son Of A Son Of A Sailor, Riddles In The Sand, and Last Mango In Paris recordings as a vocalist, died due to a stroke. Larry also played with Michael Utley and was a one time original member of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, who had the AM radio hit "Jackie Blue." He was a well admired session musician as well as songwriter. Thanks to Brian Peason

An article in today's Washington Post about the opening of the Tiki Bar on Solomons Island, MD says that the event "is evocative of a Jimmy Buffett song, an event that transforms this quiet waterfront community into a kind of 'Margaritaville' in Maryland, a place where people come to waste away the afternoon and evening." Thanks to Doug King

Jimmy talked on Radio Margaritaville today about his future plans:

The new book should hopefully be out by Christmas, he said, and he also mentioned that Tully Mars would be riding again. It also sounds like a new album won't happen until next year. He said he was taking about a year off from recording and that he was holding on to some new stuff and had some other idesa. He said that he thought he had 'one good one left' in him. (for replay schedule check RM) Thanks to Jeff May

Andrew Nixon scanned a Playboy article from 1975 (note that it has a bigger Marvin picture than is displayed somewhere on this site).

The Ledger covers the Hemisphere Dancer's appearance at the EAA Sun 'n Fun Fly-in:

Key West crooner Jimmy Buffett is something of a pilot. And while Buffett will apparently not make an appearance at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In, his plane, boasting the Margaritaville moniker on its wings, sat at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport until Monday evening. The HU16 Grumman Albatross has been a regular visitor to Sun 'n Fun in recent years. It has a customized interior, with colorfully upholstered chairs, surfboards and cases of margaritas. Buffett is on tour in the western United States, said John Stephenson, who is flying the plane for Buffett. Thanks to Rex Lewis

The Great Song Showdown has begun! Back in 1998 whenKC Angel and I ran a March Madness-like Buffett song competition to have JB listserv members and COB,O visitors determine the overall favorite Buffett song. It was hugely popular. Really, it was. So much so, we've been asked at various times to do it again. Jimmy has put out some new songs. More Buffett fans are on the Internet. Maybe the results will be different this time... Discuss the Showdown on the bulletin board!

The GCC has been updated with chords for "Green Flash at Sunset" and "Love and Luck."

April 9

A recent news item discussed how the Allman Brothers Band distributes tickets using a password protected Ticketmaster page for their fan club before they were released to the general public. I suggested this idea to Jimmy indirectly, and this is what he had to say:

This isn't a bad idea ... we are working on ideas. The problem is the demand. Just remember, the Allman brothers can do this easily, because they don't sell out everywhere and there are usually tickets available at their shows. That is not the case here, and we are trying to find a way to get the tickets to the fans instead of scalpers. A point to remember is that our prices are still way below what other instant sell out acts are getting.

I can't think of anything that would please all of Jimmy's fans more than a new ticket distribution system. This would be a bigger hit than a new album, a new video...

Thanks to Jimmy for getting back to me on this, and I certainly hope that he conjures up something good. My personal suggestion is to let the CoB,O handle ticket distribution as it sees fit. It'd only hold back about 50 tickets for behind-the-scenes scams, instead of hundreds to thousands like Ticketmaster!

What do you think of all this? Share your thoughts on the bulletin board! There have been some excellent posts, including perspective from someone who has used the Allman Bros. Band ticketing system.

April 8

Margaritaville has a new 24-Hour Pirate Marraige Kit.

Some of you may remember playing the A1A Archives Trivia Contest last year. This time around, we've made a few changes to keep things interesting, and I think you'll like the revised format. At the very least, you'll discover some fantastic music by Key West troubadour Scott Kirby. This month's prizes:

*A copy of the ultra-rare Now Generation album "Come Together" (this group was a late-1960s copy band featuring Buffett on backing vocals; see Bubba with groovy sideburns in the LP's cover photo, linked from the A1A Archives' Trivia Page).

*A very nice white-label promo 45 of Buffett's Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit on
ABC/Dunhill Records (D-4359) from 1973!

*A brand-new copy of Don Blanding's "Floridays" poetry compilation (this is
the volume that Buffett quotes in the liner notes to his album of the same
name)!

Congratulations to the winners of the CoB,O's March Madness contest! In first place is BurnipsBuffetteer with 131 points; second place goes to OC's Picks with 113 points; and third place tied at 110 by litehousekeepr and Norman Sooners. If you have not heard from me and won a prize, you need to turn on your email address in their Yahoo preferences so that I can contact you concerning their prizes... I came in with 108 points, putting me in the top 10.

Mike Donelan passed along the following:

I went to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays home opener at Tropicana Field last night. All of the small window areas that you can purchase mixed drinks at had been renamed "Rays Place at Margaritaville". The outside wall area of the stands had been airbrushed w/ a sunset scene with palm trees and a copy of Bubba's plane (similar to the logo on the bottle) & "Margaritaville Imports" was printed under the plane's wings. Both types of Margaritaville Tequila were available. The person working that the stand said the stands had been redone this year as part of a Seagram's promotion. Frozen margarita's were available also, but I could not get a straight answer whether or not they were made with Margaritaville Tequila.

This month's Virtual Parrot Head Club auctions feature an Hawaiian Shirt that Peter Mayer wore on stage during last sumner's BHOTM tour (along with other goodies). Proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association.
