May 1998 Archives May 31 The Question of the Week has been updated. Jimmy is on the June cover of Bookpage, a free publication of Bookland. On page 23, Tom Corcoran interviews him, asking him how he had
time to write a 400 page book, his wanderlust, his sense of humor,
how he judges himself, and his plans for retirement. Thanks to "Sumo Ken" Jimmy was mentioned in the May issue of Southern Boating in the article Captains' Choices, as a frequenter of Sponge Bar, Georgetown, Great Exuma, Bahamas.
Thanks to Capt. Max May 29 Another random sighting of Pirate at 50 being out early: Craig Cohen spotted it at B. Dalton's in Tyson
Corner, VA. The Toronto Sun recently mentioned the possibility of a Toronto date in the fall.
Rest assured all you PH's up north, WCBO will be on the lookout
for more info! From the "it's been too quiet around here" files: Just thought you would like to know Jimmy got reemed this morning
on The John Boy and Billy Big Show. The bit was a replay of a
response to an early 90's show in Charlotte where Jimmy only played
for an hour and a half. John Boy also recalled the first time
he met Jimmy. He said they were introduced and Jimmy looked at
John Boy's wife and said" you know that is a bootleg T-shirt."
treeflyin@aol.com May 27 Numerous people have written letting me know that today is Herman
Wouk's 83rd birthday. Herman is the author of Don't Stop The Carnival. Latest news is that there will be a book signing tour in conjunction
with this summer's tour. Note that this contradicts earlier reports,
but hey, that's what Waldens Books says! Thanks to Brian Fisher From the Chicago Sun-Times (5/24/98), courtesy of Drew Warren: It's a good bet you'll be seeing Brian Wilson sitting in with
Buffett during his June 20 stop at Alpine Valley in East Troy,
Wis., and/or his June 25 and sold-out June 27 gigs at the New
World Music Theatre in Tinley Park. May 26 An investment group, to which JB and Bill Murray belong, is negotiating
to buy the Twins. Mike Veeck, son of the late White Sox owner
Bill Veeck is doing the negotiations. They already have an interest
in six minor league teams. Thanks to Drew Warren The final round of the Jimmy Buffett Song Poll is ready for your votes. We're down to startifying the top 8
songs. I encourage everyone to go vote now because it only takes
about 30 seconds, and the deadline is May 31. The Question of the Week has been updated. May 25 Copies of Pirate Looks at 50 are slowly making their way into readers' hands. Amazon.com is reporting a June 9th date, however I expect that to change. May 23 A post from Doug Robbins on the JB Listserv reveals that A Pirate Looks at 50 is at Walden Bookstores warehouses and will be in retail outlets
in about a week. More on the re-releases: Here's what ICE has, on page 5 of issue 135 (June 1998), within
an article titled "Oldies but Goodies". "...[O]n June 30, Varese plans to reissue Jimmy Buffett's first
two albums, Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee. Originally
released on Barnaby Records, neither has been reissued on CD before.
Both will carry additional bonus tracks. Down to Earth includes
'Robert Frost', which is on the master tape as the third track
but was never used, so Varese has inserted it into its proper
place on the new CD. The single side 'He Ain't Free' is also included. The bonus track for High Cumberland Jubilee, 'High Cumberland
Dilemma', is also a track that was part of the album's original
running order but never used, so again, Varese inserted it into
the spot it initially occupied. This record has been referred
to as 'the lost Jimmy Buffett album.' As Varese Vintage chief
Cary Mansfield explains to ICE, 'Buffett himself was reportedly
upset that this album wasn't released right after his first album,
but Barnaby told him the tapes were lost. Apparently they *were*
lost for several years, and then they finally put it out in 1976,
six years after the fact.'" A special thank you to Missionary Mickey Asteriou for keeping us all up-to-date on this matter. He has a wonderful
page with RealAudio sound clips of live shows and setlists, among
other things. Drop by and tell him hi! For my Missionaries, I've added a random links to them at the left as well as on
the exit page. Above you see that the Artist of the Week has been updated. I
stongly encourage you to exapnd your collection on this no-namer! I'll leave Friday's news up until Tuesday so that everyone can
be up to speed on recent stuff. May 22 Hey who sent Chris scrambling? One last piece of news: Down To Earth will have "Robert Frost" and "He Ain't Free" as bonus tracks,
and High Cumberland Jubilee will sport "High Cumberland Dilemma." Thanks to Mickey again! To (hopefully) cap off the day, I've installed the El Cheapo (in honor of my Stumping El Bando nearly a year ago) search engine to your left, so that you may conveniently search WCBO News, including the archives, and the rest of the CoB,O site. Now even more scrambling: a reader reported that B. Daltons in Knoxville has his copy A Pirate Looks at 50 now?! Thanks to Eric Evans Barnes and Noble has added Carnival to its monthly listening centers giving it a great review of
"Buffett at his best!" Thanks to Bill Long Finally something dealing with old news: The Monserrat Archives has the lyrics and RealAudio of Jimmy's entire performance of
Volcano at the benefit for Monserrat last September in London.
Thanks Alex! Jimmy was mentioned in the recent issue of People Magazine for performing in the Nicolette Larson benefit concert. Thanks to Michael Blair Update: I contacted the other record label, which is currently planning
release of both albums on one CD. They have an unannounced summer
release date. I'm waiting to hear more from them on their plans,
and how Varese Vintage's surprising re-releasement will affect
them. Stay tuned as I work on keeping you all up-to-date. Down To Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee will reportedly be re-released on June 30 by Varese Vintage, according to ICE magazine. Each separate CD will have one bonus track. I find
this interesting because in February I was contacted by another
music company regarding my assistance on rereleasing the above
albums. They requested that the process remain under wraps due
to contractual obligations. I've inquired into what happened regarding
this project. Thanks to Margarita Mickey. Somewhere David Allan Coe is laughing. Jimmy Buffett is selling
his house in Key West. From Cyberconch: Neighbors of the songwriter/singer said Century 21 Real Estate
(Rose Sanchez) "For Sale" signs were displayed, but then quickly
taken down when the media became aware. The house is at 3628 Sunrise
Drive in Key West. I dug up this information on a certain $2.4 million dollar 6 bedroom/6
bathroom home for sale in Key West: (846) JUST REDUCED!!!2.5 lots, 2 stories, home with beautiful
sunset view, right on the water, with private beach, pool, jacuzzi,
cabana house. It has enough room to build a helicopter pad. It
has a dock and lifts for the boat. Inside the house there is a
beautiful suite. Master bedroom has Japanese decorations and an
elevator. Lots of palm streets all over. $20 annual maintance
fee for neighborhood watch. 4 central A/C and heater. I'm calling for submissions to the GCC from Carnival. If you've figured out chords to any of the new songs, please
send them to me. May 21 I was looking at Amazon.com and saw that A Pirate Looks at 50 will be available as abdridged versions on both CD ($19.25) and audiocassette ($16.80). Also saw that Jimmy contributed a recipe to a forthcoming
book (release date of May 1998) entitled Backstage Banquets: The Stars' Favorite Recipes, Reba McEntire,
Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Buffett and More ($11.96). Note that by clicking on the above links you can order the books
directly from Amazon.com. May 20 We're all hungering for news, but it's going to be slow until
we get closer to the release of Jimmy's new book, A Pirate Looks at 50. If you're really hard up for something to look at, the Coconut Telegraph has a picture of the book's spine. Bo Baber passed this interesting tidbit along: I was watching the Crock & Chase Show on TNN and they did a piece
on Garth Brooks' "Two Pina Coladas". They had two parties (BMI
and Ascap) for the success of the song. They were interviewing
the song writers of "Two Pina Coladas", Shawn Camp, Sandy Mason
and (?) Hill (Sorry I can't remember the third person first name).
Shawn Camp's comments was after they had written the song, they
were trying to get the song to Jimmy Buffett's people but Garth
Brooks got a hold of the song first. May 16-17 The Question of the Week has been updated. If you're looking for High Cumberland Jubilee on vinyl, Craig Moerer Records has a M- copy for $50. Thanks to Pete Varos for these pictures of Jimmy from Margaritaville-New Orleans (77k web page, around 30 seconds
via 28.8 modem). Thanks to the mass of email I received that let
me know it wasn't Jazzfest. I'm sorry I didn't write everyone
back but you all came like a flock of parrots over a newly washed
car! May 15 Frank Sinatra passed away after a heart attack. Jimmy appeared
on Sinatra's Duets II album, singing Mac The Knife. Jimmy was
one of surprisingly few collaborators mentioned in an article at MSNBC. Thanks to Neil Ferguson May 14 Slow news day... only news is a rumor of a Nashville show at Starwood
Ampitheatre in late June or July. Thank to David Dale May 13 Carnival will fall to slot 27 in next week's Billboard Charts.
Current sales figures are just under 100,000 units. Thanks to Kathy Shedd Well this reporter agrees with the poll results to your left:
Buffett's Carnival Offers Little Drama. At the bottom of the page there is a form for comments on Carnival... Club Trini (Utley-Greenidge) will begin recording a new album next week.
Thanks to Scott Nickerson Dick's Last Resort hosts its fifth Jimmy Buffett Music Lovers
Parrothead Extravaganza (without Buffett) today at North Pier
in Chicago. Thanks to Drew Warren Heather Goodell was kind enough to type up the Q&A with Jimmy in Vanity Fair. KC Angel has completely refurbished the Buffettesque Eateries pages. Many many many thanks to KC for helping shoulder the load.
Please drop KC a line telling him what you think of the new pages. Round 10 of the Jimmy Buffett Song Poll is open. We're down to
the nitty gritty (dirt band) so vote now! May 12 Margaritaville has refurbished their web site. It looks a lot better now, although
I did find a linking error or two, but that's to be expected (just
look around here!). Al Jewell was smart enough to make a very logical guess as to
what day Jimmy will sing the National Anthem at Wrigley Field:
Sunday afternoon, June 21 vs. Philadelphia. Jimmy's record label, Island Records, and its parent company Polygram
are involved with Seagram (yeah the booze company) in negotiating
a buyout. Any affect this would have on Jimmy is purely speculative...
For more information you can read a load of articles about the merger. Thanks to Kathy Shedd Jimmy does a Q&A with Vanity Fair in the June issue on page 234.
Thanks to Cam Perry, the newlywed May 11 Today is my last day of finals. I've been getting more email than
I ever have before. I apologize if I didn't have time to write
back to each of you individually. I really appreciate the emails
but between studying, marriage, and lesser parts of life sometimes
emails get lost in the shuffle. I have about a month off before
Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam, during that
time a handy dandy search engine will become available, and a
new look Buffettesque Eateries page will open, courtesy of fellow
CoB,O member KC Angel. You might remember KC as the force behind the Jimmy Buffett Song Poll we collaborated on. I'd like to welcome another sponsor aboard the CoB,O. The TropicTraders.com specializes in tropic gear, for example song-themed shirts. They
just got a couple new ones in so be sure to check them out! Jimmy was mentioned in passing in an article on Brian Wilson. As was reported earlier here, Jimmy co-wrote
"South American" with Brian. The song is on Brian's new album. Over the weekend I updated the Question of the Week, if you missed that. The quest for "Please Take Your Drunken 15 Year Old Girlfriend
Home" begins! If your vinyl copy of Havana Daydreamin' has this rare song, please email drunken@cobo.org with the label number and description. We're also searching for
information on a song "We've Been Taken To The Cleaners." If you
have information (or a copy!) of this song please email the above
address. All responses will be kept confidential and used for
Church purposes only. Fellow CoB,O member (and major discography
contributor) Brad Carlson and I are on a mission to put this to
rest once and for all! May 10 Happy Mother's Day! Everyone take a second to thank your Mom. The Question of the Week has been updated. The review of Carnival in the Philadelphia Inquirer posted yesterday is now available at their website. May 9 Another review of Carnival is in the Philadelphia Inquirer. [Thanks to Drify the Gypsy] Jimmy was quoted in the summer issue of Currents magazine (ok so it's a cruise ship mag) as saying "Working on
that play has been the most wonderful and most creative experience
of my life... I still love being on stage in front of 20,000 fans,
but as an artist I needed to do something different, to expand.
Now I truly feel blessed." [Thanks to Evan Chesler] Late additions yesterday included a transcript of the CNN Today interview and a Margaritaville contest. May 8 Ready for more confusion? Now we have three release dates for
A Pirate Looks at 50: June 10 (newspaper & Margaritaville-thanks Marty!), July (publisher),
and fall (Coconut Telegraph). The only good thing so far is at least you can see a picture
of it at Amazon.com. Just to remind everyone, there's only 2 more days to cast your
vote on Carnival before the CoB,O Polling Booth has a new topic! Margaritaville is running a cybercontest to sing backup with the boys on "Why
Don't We Get Drunk." Jimmy appeared on CNN Today (transcript available) this afternoon for a live interview. He
was plugging his book, wanting to fly with John Glenn, and telling
a story about buying the hotel in the Caribbean... [Thanks to Andy Niswonger] I'm looking for information on a possible re-airing of the interview.
If anyone hears anything please email me so I can get the word out. If you want to purchase the tape or
transcript, you may do so at CNN Today. I'd like to welcome another sponsor on board: A Shop Called Mango. Besides a sweet web site, they sell cool tropical gear. Check
them out! Word on the street is that pre-release copies of A Pirate Looks at 50 are surfacing. May 7 Many people using Windows have experienced difficulties in getting the enhanced Carnival CD to play correctly. Two suggestions on improving your situation:
1) buy a Mac, or 2) go download the latest version Apple's QuickTime for Windows. The latter has improved the situation for some. There's an excellent Reuters article on Jimmy and his future plans. Jimmy also is quoted in Retuers'
Notable Quotables. West Coast dates are starting to break, including a Portland show! The release of Carnival, among other albums, is the reason for a recent sales spike in the music industry. On a related note, Carnival will debut at number 15 on Billboard's Top 200 chart. [Thanks to Kathy Shedd] The Parrot Head Palooza? ISLANDFEST PRESS RELEASE Margarita Republic/Mango Man Productions announced today their
plans to bring the IslandFest Concert Series to the Keswick Theatre
In Glenside, PA on August 16, just two days prior to the Buffett
Camden concerts. This exciting show spotlights several members
of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, and is one of only four
scheduled IslandFest performances throughout the country this
summer. IslandFest features three talented recording acts with
three distinctly different styles of music, and has received rave
reviews from concert goers and critics alike. Ticket prices will
be $22.50 and will go on sale May 25th at the Keswick Box Office
at (215) 572-7650. Tickets can also be purchased by calling The
Margarita Republic at (215) 862-4588, or by sending a check for
$22.50/ticket to The Mango Men, P.O. Box 382, Perkasie, PA 18944.
Make your check payable to The Mango Men and include your name,
address, e- mail address, phone number and number of tickets requested.
THE ISLANDFEST LINEUP: SCOTT KIRBY Scott Kirby, a singer/songwriter who resides in Key West, Florida
opens the show with his primarily acoustic brand of beach folk.
When not appearing in the IslandFest series, Kirby tours extensively
throughout the country. In the cold months of winter, Scott can
often be seen playing at the legendary Hogs Breath Saloon in Key
West. THE PETER MAYER BAND Peter Mayer, along with bass player Jim Mayer and drummer Roger
Guth, are well known to Jimmy Buffett fans as the backbone of
the Coral Reefer Band. Those more familiar with Pete know he spends
much of his time touring the states. He has also toured extensively
through Spain and France with his own band performing his brand
of alternative rock and jazz. A spectacular guitarist and singer/songwriter,
Mayer has penned a number of songs with Buffett, along with performing
on several national tours with Chicago and the Moody Blues. CLUB TRINI - MICHAEL UTLEY, ROBERT GREENIDGE & RALPH MACDONALD
Michael Utley & Robert Greenidge are also two names many people
will associate with Jimmy Buffett. In addition to 25 years of
playing keyboards and producing CD's for Jimmy Buffett, Michael
Utley has performed with Eric Clapton, Kris Kristopherson, Jackson
Brown, Bruce Springsteen and many others. Robert Greenidge, one
of the best steel drum players in the world, has also performed
with the likes of John Lennon and the Beach Boys. Also joining
the "Club Trini" band will be famed percussionist Ralph MacDonald.
In addition to his many years with the Coral Reefers, Ralph has
played with Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon and co-wrote such hits
as "Where is the Love" and "Just The Two of Us". The Club Trini
set rounds out the IslandFest show perfectly with a unique blend
of Caribbean calypso highlighted by the magical sound of Greenidge's
steel drums. Tickets: The Keswick Theatre Box Office (starting May 25th) Event Contact Information: Chris Bowes OR John Creidler May 6 Latest Coconut Telegraph reports the release of A Pirate Looks At 50: A Journal has been moved back to this fall. Sigh... [Thanks to Marty Farrell] More news from Jazzfest, courtesy of "Guy": Official tally for Saturday at Jazzfest - 98,000 paid attendance
- a new Jazzfest one day record, attributed to both JB and local
favorite Better Than Ezra playing the same day (and same time
as a matter of fact). Also, Jimmy was a no-show at an announcement party Saturday morning
to announce the formation of a new foundation to provide health
care for New Orleans musicians in conjunction with LSU Medical
Center. Jimmy is expected to be an honorary board member. His
sister Lucy was there in his place. May 5 Finally! We have setlists from all of Jimmy's shows last weekend at Jazzfest in New Orleans.
Pictures to follow soon... I'd like to welcome the first of the CoB,O sponsors. Parrotise Isle offers a great deal on "Dancing Parrot" window decals. Believe
it or not I even have a couple. They're only a couple bucks; what
a great way to show everyone you're a parrot head! There are only a couple sponsor openings left. If you'd like to
help sponsor the CoB,O please see our low advertising rates. May 4 I have confirmation that Jimmy will be singing "Take Me Out To
The Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field (Chicago
Cubbies) this year. [Thanks to Bryan Coleman] May 3 The Question of the Week has been updated. I'm really smoking now, two weeks in a row! Pictures of Jimmy's appearance at Margaritaville Cafe-New Orleans
are available at the PM Band web page. [Thanks to Parrothead Jim] Advertising spots are filling up rapidly; if you are teetering on becoming
a sponsor now is the time to act. The Jimmy Buffett Song Poll is now at round 9. Voting is open until Thursday, so be sure
to take a few seconds and go vote. Looking for some cool collectables? Legends Concert Posters has sheet music from "It's My Job" and backstage passes from the 91 Outpost Tour and the 97 Havana Daydremin' Tour. Still undecided about buying Carnival? Dave Speigner of the Island Time Parrot Head Club has a thorough review of the album vs. the musical, each song, and more. It's definitely
worth your time. I was checking the stastistics for the new web site. Since April
21 when this server became public, just under 5000 people visited
this page alone-almost 500 per day! You guys have also viewed
close to a gigabytes' worth of data. I'm very happy with the traffic
that's coming here, thanks! May 2 Sam Goody has a review of Carnival, and RealAudio of "Time To Go Home." [Thanks to Chuck Seward] Do you believe in Buffett? Want to link to the CoB,O and/or be
linked from the CoB,O? Then the CoB,O Missionary program is for you. I have greatly expanded the CoB,O Gift Shop. Now you can buy music from former CRB members and other artists
with a Buffett connection. I have also added many new books, ranging
with topics ranging from Pirates to Parrots and more! Please check
it out-I think you'll find something there you don't have and
that you'd enjoy, at a good price. I have even recommended certain
albums to suit your particular music taste. In Friday's issue of USA Tody, there was a 1/2 page ad for Carnival in the Sports section. It seems as if Island is pushing for sales and not necessarily radio play. I think
that's sort of backwards for Jimmy, as the majority of his fans
will snap up the new album when they see it, but others won't
buy it unless they hear selections from it first. But then again
I am not in marketing... [Thanks to Kathy Shedd] May 1 As first rumored here, Jimmy did make a surprise appearance last
night at Margaritaville Cafe, New Orleans. He played a 90 minute
set after the PM Band's set. [Thanks to PARROTDR@aol.com] "Island Fever" did not make any noise on the charts... An eyebrow raising post on the JB Listserv gives a status on Parrothead Beer, saying
that Anheiseur-Busch is currently doing marketing taste studies. The Boston Globe has a good piece on Jimmy, his book, the new album, the status
of the musical, and what this summer's shows may be like. [Thanks to Maryjomurf@aol.com]
