Click Here PleaseThe CoB,O was selected (along with probably 50 million other web sites) by Island Records to help promote the release of the new album. If you'd shamelessly click on the graphic to your left, you can show Island Records just how popular the CoB,O is and visit Margaritaville at the same time. Two additional banners are available: #1 and #2.

CNN reviews the new album:

With his celebrity still largely restricted to North America where his loyal "Parrothead" following is immense, author, restaurateur, musical composer and veteran singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett unleashes his 31st album, "Beach House On The Moon," a strong, predictably carefree outing including not only 13 new tracks, but also -- as an enhanced CD release playable on a PC -- rare video footage of the artist performing in the studio.

I fixed the link to the review on the rehearsal-the web site moved it to their archives.

The new Eateries archive is open. Over 400 places to chow are listed...

The dress rehearsal in Charleston yesterday has the CoB,O intrigued. "Ringling, Ringling?" Bring it on! Charleston.Net covers the show in Lucky fans kick back with Buffett.

Bob Robinson from the Sandlapper PH Club:

Just rolled in from Charleston and my first-ever rehearsal concert. Jimmy and the boys (and gals) were tight and had the North Charleston Coliseum rockin' today. Due to having to coach my daughter's last baseball game this morning, I wasn't able to leave town until noon, had a 2 1/2 hour drive ahead of me, and missed the first half of the show. But it was well worth it. As I arrived at the coliseum, Bubba was dishin' up Gumbo and havin' a blast. 'Twas awesome as I walked unhurried to within 10 feet of the stage and settled in for the rest of the performance. All the songs you know by heart were played and Jimmy is back to playing Brown Eyed Girl again. Pacing the Cage was phabulous and sounded great live. Jimmy only mangled a few lines the whole day (at least from the time I was there). Set List Surprise: I missed this jewel from the first set, but they played Ringling, Ringling. Can't wait to hear it Tuesday. Flesh & Bone was killer also with Jim Mayer providing the bass vocal in the chorus. The back drop remained constant throughout with an ocean/beach scene and a "full earth" rising over the lunar sea.

Jimmy has the stage set up like a dock by the sea with a little shanty on the right & Robert G pounding the pans in front of it. Looks like an ol' bait shack that's almost ready to collapse around Robert. Pete, Mac and Jim are wholed up next to one another on the left side of the stage and don't have a lot of room to maneuver around. Doyle Grisham was stuck between Roger's drum set-up and the bait shack and appeared scrunched there as well. Tina and Nadirah seem to have the most freedom on the left side of the stage. Amy & the boys are on the right side of the stage and have choreographed some really kool moves. All in all it was a fun experience. If only all of Jimmy's concerts were this wide open and unstructured. BTW, Jimmy messed up a lyric on Flesh & Bone and grabbed someone's liner notes from the audience to check out the lyrics. See y'all Tuesday in Charlotte......

Dancer Heather Perry has broken her foot and will miss the 1st half of the tour. Thanks to Chris Anderson

May 29 It's Kim's birthday!

If you're one of the lucky, you were invited to a private rehearsal concert today at the North Charleston Coliseum. Check back later today for a full report.

The Miami Herald has a nice article about Meeting of the Minds: Buffett's Parrotheads flocking to Keys again this fall

DeseretNews has a crappy review of the new album:

Which brings us to Jimmy Buffett. "Beach House On the Moon" (Margaritaville/Island) is just his staple Calypso rock. No surprises. No changes. No life. Not even the Deseret Industries could salvage this one.

[How they figured this was Calypso Rock I'll never know.]

If you saw Jimmy outside Studio 1A for The Today Show's Summer Concert Series, post a note on the Bulletin Board so all can share!

NYC Police Commissioner Howard Safir was at the concert. He's apparently a Parrothead and could be seen singing along to "Volcano." Movie producer Frank Marshall was there as well (still working on the script to Where Is Joe Merchant?). Thanks to Mike Mongulla

MSNBC will be airing a Time and Again dedicated to The Today Show Concert Series tonight at 6 pm EST. "Margaritaville" from today's performance is included. Thanks to Mike Mongulla

I just finished watching the performance (Indiana is 1 hour behind the rest of the world, in more than one way), and I was very impressed. I'll write a full review later today, but suffice it to say that Jimmy and the CRB sounded very tight. If anyone video/audio taped it and would be willing to donate a copy to the CoB,O so that everyone could share... I'll make it available. Note that this can't be the NBC video tape as that is copyrighted.

NBC aired 3 of Jimmy's songs this morning: "Margaritaville," "Pacing the Cage," and "Volcano." Jimmy then finished with "Come Monday," "I Will Play for Gumbo," and "Cheeseburger In Paradise." Thanks to Kevin Gibson

USA Today reports that "Jimmy Buffett reconnects with worshipful Parrotheads starting Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C." under Boomer Fare in Tours for all tastes. Thanks to Bruce Zook?

Songlines member Scott Kirby is helping out a good cause:

On Saturday, June 19th, the Chesapeake Parrot Head Club proudly presents "Havana Daydreamin' ," a VERY Special Happy Hour to benefit Save the Manatee, with special guests/Key West recording artists Scott Kirby and Bobby Donaldson, on the deck at Little Havana Restaurante & Cantina, 1325 Key Highway, Baltimore, 2-6 p.m. $2 Coronas, $2.50 margaritas, and $3 cheeseburgers; free munchies. Raffle and auction (including Scott Kirby as your dining companion). $10 cover. Tickets available at Little Havana or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with your check made out to CPHC, 500 Bay Dale Court, Arnold, MD 21012. Great Scott Kirby posters for the first 50 mail orders (will be handed out the day of the concert).

Bruce Prentice passed this along:

Some disgruntled Parrot Heads are beginning a campaign to convince Jimmy and his management to reconsider skipping the Western tour this fall. I am hoping that you will put an item in WCBO News to encourage West Coast Parrot Heads to e-mail Margaritaville, and also to write to Jimmy's management company to let them know how we feel. His management company's address is:
HK Management
9200 Sunset Blvd.
Suite 530
Los Angeles, CA
90069
I don't know if it will do any good, but it's worth a try.

I'd like to thank everyone who "took care of me" this morning outside Studio 1A. You know what you did and who you are :-)

The new album is #4 on the Internet Sales Chart and #5 on Amazon.com. Thanks to Tom Gill

Today Show rehearsal info from Kevin Gibson and Jim Cavaco:

I just got back from the Today Show Rehearsal. I arrived at 2am, there were about 20 people already there. They finished setting up at 4:30am, Jimmy and the Band arrived at 5:15am and started rehearsals at 5:45am. They played Maragaritaville, Volcano, Pacing The Cage, Come Monday and I will Play for Gumbo. During Margaritaville Jimmy Threw Krispy Kreme Donuts to the crowd, Which at that time was probably around 1500 people. The sound was great, Jimmy was in excellent spirits. After Rehearsals he came over to where we were standing and signed albums, shirts, etc.. I was lucky enough to have him sign my bhotm cd. All in all it was worth the trip. The only down side was that the producer made Jimmy play Margaritaville three times. I think it was the only song the producer knew.

Buffett played off and on from 5:45 to 6:30 checking sound, etc. Looks likes Margaritaville, Come Monday, and I Will Play for Gumbo.

E! Online gives the new album a D.

More information on the woman who had her fantasy job read on The Today Show (thanks to Kristen Barger):

As a “Pirate Looking at 40” this year, my ultimate fantasy job would have to be a “roadie” for Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band. I’m sure this position requires a lot of hard work and it’s probably not nearly as glamorous as I would like to think it is, but I would love to do this job for just one day to see the behind-the-scenes workings of putting a major concert tour together. Having been on the front side of the Buffett stage (and having had some of the most fun times of my life), it would be totally awesome to be behind it if only for a little while. It could be (to quote a title from Jimmy’s newest album) my “permanent reminder of a temporary feeling!”

Mary Beth Rotella
       Somewhere other than Margaritaville

The GCC has been updated with a handful of new songs, including "Lucky Stars" from the new album.

Note that yesterday Margaritaville was to make an announcement regarding the New Year's Eve show. Am I gonna have to spill the beans or are they?

May 26

Dave Pittman passed this along, and I have independent verification from inside sources that this is true:

I just heard this from Steve Huntington on Radio Margaritaville following the end of Lage Nom Ai, "Lage Nom Ai, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band from Barometer Soup. And a song propelled to prominence as the show opener for Beach House on the Moon Tour. Because it's that good. I caught a listen, just the other day in the live setting."

Beach House On The Moon comes in at #8 on next weeks Billboard's Top 200 chart, selling a bit over 99, 700 units. Thanks to Kathy Shedd

The cast of The Today Show is doing a "Fantasy Job" segment each day this week. Today Al read a lady's who wanted to be a roadie for Jimmy Buffett & the CRB. Thanks to Andee Caudill

Michael Carnell attended the Mac McAnally show last night in Charleston:

Well the Mac McAnally concert was great. The first set was just Mac. For the second set he was joined by Fingers Taylor and then later they were joined by Peter and Jim Mayer. Michael Utley was there, but he never took the stage. It was a small gathering with a lots of good music and a lot of good people. Buffett never showed, but according to Mac McAnally, that was due to an early morning call for a video shoot today. The man needs his beauty rest!

The next scheduled title from Margaritaville Books will be The Margaritaville Cookbook, which is slated for a late-summer release. It will feature recipes for ALL the food items mentioned in Jimmy's songs, from hush puppies, spongecake and coconut tarts to cheeseburgers and jambalaya. Previous Margaritaville Books include "The Essential Book of Boat Drinks & Assorted Frozen Concoctions," as well as "Things You Know by Heart: 1001 Questions from the Songs of Jimmy Buffett." They are created exclusively for Jimmy by The Peninsula Press, which also publishes Jimmy Buffett's Shipwreck Editions and titles on related subjects like coastal living, Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. For more information on The Peninsula Press, visit http://www.capecod.net/peninsulapress.

The Dupont Registry has a number to call to rent Jimmy's former Key West home for the millenium week. Apparently bids are starting at $100,000 for the week. Airfare and a private chef are included in this bargain. For more info call Vance at 1-800-233-1731. Thanks to Scott Dusko

The San-Antonio Express-News has a favorable review (3 1/2 stars) of the new album in Songs from ex-pirates past their prime.

The Detroit-Free Press offers this hope for fans without tickets to Pine Knob:

Waited too long to get tickets for Jimmy Buffett's June 8 Pine Knob concert?
Well, listen up, Parrotheads. Island Jimmy's Coffee and Provisions, inside the Star Theatre Great Lakes Crossing megaplex, has 200 tickets for the sold-out concert. Sign up anytime through Monday and you have a chance to win a pair. And if you don't win? They'll have another drawing -- 1,000 folks will win a pair of movie tickets.

Rick Garner transcribed The Daily Show bit about Jimmy and "Math Sux." The only really funny part is about the weed...

May 25

The Detroit News sides with Jimmy in Jimmy Buffett tweaks math, but teachers don’t get the joke .

I still need help with the Eateries archives... see below.

May 24

This just in...

You will probably get several e-mails on this, but I was just watching The Daily Show on Comedy Central (5/24/99) and they did an extended, not-so-flatering, bit on Jimmy's song "math suks". For example, they used an intersecting diagram to show Jimmy's fan base as those people who are Garth Brooks fans, Forty year old frat guys, and ponytailed alcoholics. There were a few other jokes that really weren't that funny. Thanks to JCD

The Eateries page is ready to be moved to a database driven system. However, I need help in moving all these eateries into the database. If you'd like to volunteer a few minutes of your time to help the cause, I'd appreciate it (it ain't gonna get done if people don't help!). Just email me and I'll send you instructions and either a state with eateries already listed that need to be copied and pasted into a form, or I'll forward you 10 new additions to be made. Each eatery will take you about 30 seconds, if that.

I've converted the Setlist Archive to a new database driven archive with automatic addition of user submitted setlists. What this means for you is you can add a setlist and it will automatically appear... therefore as soon as someone sumbits a new setlist from this tour everyone can see it immediately; you don't have to wait for me to upload it. I'd appreciate it if everyone could play with the new archive to test it out this week prior to the tour beginning...

As Andy Niswonger pointed out, a local PBS show Across Indiana will focus on Buffett's lawyers and their feeding frenzy:

"Something Vaguely Resembling a ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’" It wasn’t the first time a simple cheeseburger caught the fancy of one of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars. Only Jimmy Buffett didn’t immortalize this particular sandwich in song, but rather in a legal brief. And he didn’t find it in a tropical paradise, but in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. A fancy New York City law firm representing the singer / songwriter, threatened to sue "Whiskey Island," a tropical-themed restaurant in this tiny southeastern Indiana town, for their use of "Cheeseburger in Paradise" as the name of a menu item. Buffett, of course, recorded a hit song by the same name. See what happens when a small town lawyer goes up against the "big city" firm, employing an "aw shucks" maneuver to humor the stuffed-shirted attorneys into a settlement.
**Legal Note (notice the small print): This show is co-hosted by Attorney Suzette Bewley from the Indianapolis law firm of Baker and Daniels. Suzette (yes, she's a "real" attorney who counsels Across Indiana's producing station, WFYI-TV) added tongue-in-cheek commentary regarding the Jimmy Buffet / "Cheeseburger in Paradise" trademark dispute.

As Tom Alexander points out, Sidewalk Boston compares Sammy Hagar's new album to Jimmy Buffett, and includes the notable quote:

Instead of trying his hand at more cornball metal songs or Van Halen sound-a-like tunes, Hagar is trying to pass himself off as Jimmy Buffett. His new album, Red Voodoo, is filled with good-time drinking and party songs that are about as fresh as day-old tequila. One Jimmy Buffett is already more than enough. While Sammy probably has visions of endless, profitable summer tours running through his head, he needs to get his parrot head out of the clouds and start focusing on his music.

The Naples Daily News offers some more insight into the manatee meeting:

Last week singer/manatee advocate Jimmy Buffett visited the governor to encourage him to veto a pair of measures that would strip $900,000 from the state manatee trust fund.
One project earmarks $500,000 for the Lowry Park Zoo for a project that doesn't seem to have much to do with manatees at all. Another $395,000 is being tagged for a manatee education center in Fort Pierce, next to the stomping grounds of Rep. Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie and head of the House Appropriations Committee.
Buffett thinks both projects are great. He just doesn't think manatee money should be spent when there are other matters - like manatee rescue - for which the money can be used.

The Tampa Tribune offers a different perspective in Boaters, anglers deserve equal time with Gov. Bush on the manatee meeting Jimmy had with Governor Jeb Bush, including the fact that Jimmy wanted the 5 million dollars pegged for a manatee hospital to be redirected to research. Not that I think this is a bad idea-wouldn't this strike towards the heart of the problem and help prevent more manatees from needing the hospital?

The CoB,O was mentioned on Radio Margaritaville around 12:30 a.m. Steve Huntington was doing his usual talking in between sets when he said, "Here's one for the Church of Buffett. The Ballad of Spider John." Of course we appreciate digging in the old treasure chest for those gems! Thanks to Andy Niswonger

Interesting rumor about Jimmy being close to signing to play Jones Beach in early to mid-August...

CRB member Amy Lee's website is now up and running. She has some good stories about how she became a Coral Reefer and pictures from the rehearsals in Charleston.

Pine Knob's summer program has a short synopsis of Jimmy's career.

Entertainment Weekly's review of the new album, courtesy of Mickey Asteriou:

Buffett's 31st album finds the escapist troubadour musing on mortality and regret with a pensiveness that's considerably more compelling than his usual laid-back hedonism. That tone lends a darker resonance to wry, humorous tunes like "Flesh and Bone," suggesting that Buffett's been wrestling withissues weightier than which Hawaiian shirt to wear. Grade B

The meeting of Jimmy Buffett & Jeb Bush has made it to the Hollywood Minute on CNN Headline News with footage of the Hot Water tour for the background with the voice over. The footage show Buffett, of course, Robert Greenidge, Tim Drummond, "Fingers" Taylor & Michael Utley (with his mustache). This also made the CNN pager newsfeed. Thanks to Bo Baber

Jimmy is mentioned in Maxim Magazine in "Maxim for Maxim Men" with a quote under the random thoughts section of this article on page 130: "We are the people our parents warned us about." Thanks to David Cohen

Songlines continues to grow with Buffettesque musicians, including one from Australia. Check it out and expand your music collection!

People Magazine reviews Beach House On The Moon:

The world was a whole lot simpler when the poet laureate of life in the slow lane only worried about stepping on pop tops in Magaritaville. Now 52, Pascagoula, Mississippi's native son may be getting just a bit cranky. Having expressed his views on aging in his 1998 bestseller A Pirate Looks at 50, Buffett elaborates on the theme here. In "I Don't Know and I Don't Care," he complains that he's cursed with "a PBS mind in an MTV world." He even grumbles (in "Flesh and Bone") about becoming an end-of-century anachronism: "I can't e-mail my hear/ I can't see your face in cyberspace."

Happily, Buffett finds salvation in his lilting Caribbean-flavored music. And his easygoing humor keeps him from seeming as down in the mouth as he is long in the tooth. In ""Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Feeling," the song that will remind fans of the yarn-spinning performer of yore, he sings of one-night stands and drunken visits to tattoo parlors. "There's no dumb-ass vaccine," notes Buffett, all his old wryness intact. Bottom Line: Reach for your aloha shirt

[caption picture of Jimmy lounging reads Jimmy Buffett navigates the cold midlife stream with good humor.]

The Miami Herald has more quotes and insight on Jimmy's visit to governor Jeb Bush in Buffett talks to Bush about manatee safety.

Margaritaville has pictures from Jimmy's trip to Havana in the Music Bridges project in March.

Jimmy mentioned on Radio Margaritaville that they (specifically him and Nadirah) were going to do a song "In Cairo" this summer at the concerts. This song was done during the Club Trini recording at New Orleans in April. Also, Steve and Jimmy mentioned that Radio Margaritaville is now housed in a silver Airstream trailer next to the Orlando Margaritaville Cafe. They invited any lunch time patrons to stop by and bang on the side. Tell 'em the CoB,O says "Hello!" Thanks to Dave Pittman

From the June issue of Golf Digest, an interview with Payne Stewart:

"Years ago you quit smoking and chewing tobacco. You still clean?"

"Well, I was off of it for almst three years. I used the patch, and it worked. It killed the craving. Then I started back. I was at a buddy's house and we were laid back, drinking some rum and having a good time, listening to Jimmy Buffett. Then he broke out some Cuban cigars. So I smoke a Cuban cigar, and man, was that good. So the next night I had another one. That just started the process again. Then I would..." Thanks to Jay Eick

An Air Force psychiatrist is using "Margaritaville" as one of many rock songs to help technicians remember the symptoms of mental illnesses:

Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" provides a crash course in alcoholism and therapy, Nelson reports. While the first verse claims "it's nobody's fault," Nelson notes that by the end Buffet is singing "It's my own damn fault."

Ed Booth has some photos from inside of Jimmy's Albatross Amphibian.

CRB member Amy Lee has a new website going up at amyleesax.com that will feature behind the scenes pictures from the past 10 years with the Coral Reefers among other things. Thanks to John Jeffcoat

More on the CD Now fiasco... they are giving credits of $5-8 to folks who complain. If you haven't received your credit fill out their complaint form. Ironically, Jimmy's new album is featured on their front page for $12.58...

And to tempt fate even more I used my coupon to pre-order CRB member Mac McAnally's new CD Word Of Mouth for $12.49 with free standard shipping (June 1 release). Note that Jimmy and other CRB members played and sang on this album.

The New York Post gave Beach House On The Moon 2.5 stars.

More on the Jeb Bush vs. the Manatees from UPI:

BUFFETT DANGLES LAWSUIT THREAT: Jimmy Buffett is warning Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that unless the state does more to protect the endangered manatee, environmental groups will sue under the federal Endangered Species Act. Buffett, a co-founder of the Save the Manatee Club, told Bush that more than 20 environmental groups have been working on the lawsuit for more than a year. They want to arrange for more boat speed zones, better enforcement of existing zones and the creation of sanctuaries to protect breeding manatees. Last year, 66 manatees were killed in collisions with boats, the highest ever. A Manatee Club spokesman says the group is optimistic it can meet its goals without resorting to a lawsuit.

Mac McAnally will be performing at Captain Harry's Blue Marlin Bar in downtown Charleston on Tuesday, May 25 at 9 pm. Thanks to Frank

In today's New Orleans Times-Picayune, columnist Chris Rose was asking various celebrities what they would be doing on New Year's Eve. Jimmy said that he would be on stage at a location he would not disclose, that he felt more comfortable on stage, and that he always felt that New Year's Eve was "amateur night." He said he would then take off for somewhere in the islands. Thanks to Duris Holmes

"Math Suks" was mentioned on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee this morning. Kathie Lee was talking about how Jimmy saw the graffiti "Math Suks" painted on a wall and was inspired to write his new song. Thanks to Kathleen McDaniel

The Boston Globe reviews the new album.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer mentioned Buffett:

Yesterday's PI sports section had an article on Chip Hanauer coming back to hydroplane driving. It talked about his unpretentious living - he lives in the house once owned by his grandmother. It describes his living room: "Jimmy Buffett's latest novel, a "A Pirate Looks at Fifty," sits on the coffee table amid several racing magazines. Three acoustic gitars are lined up neatly along one wall. A small couch and a stereo are the only other pieces of furniture." (Chip Hanauer is one of the local heroes and is one of the best unlimited hydroplane drivers of all time.) Thanks to Alex Shogren

Margaritaville will be sponsoring a Jimmy Buffett look-a-like contest at the 8th Annual Meeting of the Minds, October 22, 1999. It's open to the first 75 Jimmies that register at the Hilton Pier B Friday 2:30 pm at the Parrot Head Private Pier Sunset Celebration. Thanks to Nancy Nutile-McMenemy

More details on the meeting with Florida governer Jeb Bush yesterday:

AP: Jimmy Buffett Sticks Up for Manatees

Naples News: Jimmy Buffett meets with Bush on preservation (includes photo)

(Yahoo) The top parrot head is urging Governor Jeb Bush to do something about the plight of the manatees. Singer Jimmy Buffett met with Bush for about 20-minutes yesterday afternoon, telling the governor that too many of the slow-moving marine mammals are dying after being run over by boats. Buffett says the state needs to do more. Specifically, he wants to see stricter enforcement of boating laws designed to protect the gentle creatures.

Regarding the uproar among the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics over "Math Suks," Jimmy told USA Today yesterday "I was only talking about algebra. I got A's in geometry. They should get a sense of humor."

The Wall of Sound gave the new album a 73 and a very positive review.

May 19

More confirmations are rolling that the New Year's Eve show in L.A. will be the only west coast show this year. Don't ask me why... Anyway, tickets will be $500 - 1500 but include everything and only 5000 will be sold. Margaritaville will reportedly have more news on May 26, but sources indicate the tickets will only be sold through phone lines and the web, and that those folks who shell out the big bucks will get some damn fine food. The CoB,O actually knows more but is not going to steal Margaritaville's thunder. <wink wink>

Today Jimmy met with Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at his mansion. Jimmy vehemently opposed Bush in his last two runs for the office, however, Jeb won this year. Supposedly, Jimmy was there to "ensure that the manatees were protected" including maybe a six figure lawsuit. Jimmy did say something to the fact that he was pleasantly surprised with Jeb's governing so far. Jimmy then flew back to Charleston for rehearsals immediately after the 20 minute meeting. Thanks to Dave Pittman

Another interesting rumor is that Jimmy will launch a new tequila label for the next millenium.

Mike DeGraba passed this along:

Washington, DC radio station WMAL's afternoon DJ's Stevens and Core devoted quite a bit of time to "Math Suks" and reactions to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' condemnation of the song. They played the song a number of times and took calls from math teachers that derided the council for their lack of a sense of humor. One teacher said he already has a group of students by the same name who do extra work in hopes of getting better at the dreaded subject. Alas, I am a high school math teacher myself, and was mortified by the reaction of the Council. I couldn't believe they would spend money on such a ridiculous public outcry to a song, and though I have resisted joining the group, I'm considering doing so just so I can cancel my membership.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a review of the new album.

According to Entertainment Weekly, at number 6 (up from 9) in Billboard's pop catalog chart rests Songs You Know By Heart with 429 weeks on the chart. Thanks to KC Angel

James Baden passed this along:

I saw Episode One last night here in Connecticut at a Showcase Cinema. Anyway, they played "Margaritaville" before the movie started. I was wondering if you could find out if other theaters where doing the same thing. Since they don't play much Buffett in the Northeast, I wonder if it was some creative advertising tool for Beach House On The Moon.

May 18

From USA Today:

Math teachers flunk Buffett tune

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is not happy about Jimmy Buffett's new song, Math Suks, found on his just-released Beach House on the Moon album. "It's a very, very negative song," Michigan State University professor and council president Glenda Lappan says. "This is a great disappointment. I'm a serious Jimmy Buffett fan. I have tapes in my car." The council issued a statement condemning the tune, saying: "Today's students need to be inspired more than ever to learn and understand mathematics." What does the council expect Buffett to do? It will ask him that, "as a recording artist and icon, he say some things that would put a more positive spin on mathematics for kids," Lappan says. The council is on another mission, she says, "to warn the world that no, it's not funny. This is very serious." Buffett was not immediately available to comment.

The Great Chords Compilation is seeking tabs for the new album...

Margaritaville has a new Beach House On The Moon page with lyrics and art from the CD booklet (basically there's no reason to go see it if you own the CD, I just included it for completeness' sake).

While many people on the Buffett Listserv seem to be disenchanted with the new album, I think it is the best album since Coconut Telegraph. Of course this is only the webmaster and not all the high powers of the CoB,O speaking, but I've been known to be tough to please in the past!

Jimmy and Steve Huntington were discussing bootlegging Radio Margaritaville and Jimmy said, "You will go to hell if you bootleg Radio Margaritaville or my CDs!" "Burning in hell is a permanent reminder"... segue into Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Feeling. He also mentioned that the wedding segment of that song was written about Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra's Las Vegas wedding. Thanks to Dave Pittman

Jimmy is the Ultimate Band List's Band of the Week. They are offering a contest for free autographed posters and CDs.

Further proof that Math really does Suk: look at the bottom right corner of the last page in the new CD booklet. The proofreader can't count :-)

CD Now seems to have screwed up; most people's orders are backordered. Please do not email me telling me this; I have already contacted CD Now and called them on the phone to voice my displeasure. Their explaination was that they were swamped with advance orders. Well that certainly makes me look bad, doesn't it? I apologize to everyone for the inconvenience, and unless CD Now properly rectifies the situation I will be breaking all contact from them and searching for a better music store on the web to fulfill your needs.

Radio Margaritaville aired a clip this morning with Jimmy talking about his performance at Orlando's Margaritaville Cafe as well as seeing Sheryl Crow. Thanks to Dave Pittman

Jimmy's latest album Beach House On The Moon has been released. The new album is featured on CD Now's main page with an even lower price of $12.58, while Amazon.com offers it at $14.99 with a sales rank of 153. As noted over the past week various listening parties and promotional giveaways have allowed the select few to get an advance listen. Once you've heard it don't forget to cast your vote in the latest CoB,O Poll!

The current issue of People Magazine (May 24th) contains a "Special Advertisement Section" that contains food recipes from celebrities; it includes seven from Jimmy Buffett. These concoctions range from Cajun Fettucini to Black Bean Soup and appear to be items featured at the Margaritaville Cafes. They also include a few photos of Jimmy and the New Orleans Margaritaville Cafe (photos are on the small side). Thanks to Lon Ormanian

Jimmy arrived in Charleston this morning to begin tour rehearsals at the North Charleston Coliseum. Rehearsals will likely take the remainder of this week. Please do not interfere with the rehearsals... they are closed to the general public, and the CoB,O does not advocate hounding the facility!

More confirmation on the future of the old Citron building Jimmy bought in Sag Harbor comes from the New York Daily News (note that he purchased this back in February):

Jimmy Buffett just purchased a commercial building in Sag Harbor and is converting the second floor into offices and guest quarters for those friends who are kept at arm's length from his main house in North Haven.

Before the Miami Heat game today, the news did a special on the new arena being built. They mentioned that Jimmy's new Maragritaville would be right on the water. The grand opening of the arena is on New Year'sEve with a Gloria Estephan concert, but no mention of a date for Margaritaville. Thanks to finsup1001@aol.com

Pat Bussey passed along this report on Friday's Mac McAnally show (rumors were swirling that Jimmy might attend):

I attended the Mac McAnally show in Fairhope at Judge Joy Beans tonight. Over 1000 people attended the outside show and I think 75% came to see Buffett. At least by looking at the Hawaiian shirts. Jimmy didn't show up. McAnally played "In the City," "When the Coast is Clear," "Oysters and Pearls," and a new song he said Jimmy and he would be doing over the summer. The word was that Buffett was going to show up, but the show ended at 10:00 and I stayed until 12:00 and no Buffett. It was a good show anyway.

The L.A. Times review of Beach House on the Moon (two stars or "fair") courtesy of Evan Chesler:

Jimmy Buffett, "Beach House on the Moon," Island. On his 31st (!) album (in stores Tuesday), the ever-mellow king of the Parrot-heads serves up more Caribbean flavored, blues informed, gently wry tunes with telling titles such as "I Will Play For Gumbo" and "I Don't Know and I Don't Care." You wouldn't care either if you were going to sell as many concert tickets as Buffett inevitably will this summer.

The Central Wisconsin's Order of the Sleepless Knights Parrot Head Club will have its first organizational meeting and also a listening party of Jimmy's latest CD Beach House on the Moon. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 at Rhodys Bar located at 2301 Church St. in Stevens Point, WI. Come join us for a night of Corona and boat drink specials and help the latest PHC get started. Please contact club president Jim Stanislawski if you plan on attending.

Express-News has a nice article on former Margaritaville Records recording artist The Iguanas. Regarding Margaritaville they said:

MCA Nashville is the parent company of Margaritaville. They were very nice people, but they had no idea what to do with us," Coman said with a laugh. "We realized that quickly."

The METRO Parrot Head Club will be holding it's pre-release party on Saturday, May 15 at the Duval Street Pub in Oakdale, NY. Eddie Travers a local musician who excels in Buffett covers (but can do so much more) will be appearing. We will be playing portions of the CD in during the breaks in Eddie's show. We also will be doing a Beach House On The Moon "Anti-Scavenger" Hunt, wherein we will be giving participants packages containing 13 items (one for each song). They will then have to purchase the CD and learn the lyrics (either by reading the liner notes or actually listening to the music) in order to find the clues that link each item to a particular song.

The Omaha Nebraska Parrot Head Club and Sam Goody will be having an advance listening party at the Sharks Club Banquet Hall on Saturday, May 15th. Sharks Club is located in the Oak Creek Inn on 72nd and Center. You can pre-order your copy at the listening party for the low price of 12.99. The first 60 people to pre-order their copy will receive a BHTM poster. There will be plenty of prizes to win all night long including the promotional copy of the CD!

"Math Suks" made USA Today in Buffett see fans of math rant growing. Stuff like this in the mainstream media leaves little doubt why most folks don't understand parrot heads. Thanks to Andy

Jimmy played Margaritaville in Orlando last night. The occasion was the opening of Universal Studio's new theme park "Island of Adventures." Jimmy sat with Cameron, Delaney, and Michael Douglas up until the time he took the stage. The setlist:

(with Gary and the Landsharks)

The New Year's Eve show is in fact at Universal Ampitheatre in L.A., not at the Hollywood Bowl as erroneously stated by a Margaritaville employee.

Jimmy is quoted about Music Bridges Over Troubled Waters:

I'm no stranger to Cuban music but this was one of the best events I've ever been involved in, we all had a ball and made a lot of new friends. I congratulate all the organizers on both sides for making it possible and I hope we can get to hear all the wonderful songs again sooner rather than later.

Jimmy played last night at his sister's bar (Lu Lu's) in Fairhope, AL. Preliminary reports indicate he was by himself and that he got a girl got on stage to play the tambourine. Thanks to Pat Bussey

The Mobile Press Register had an article this week about the Mac McAnally show this Friday at Judge Roy Bean's in Fairhope. It said that Jimmy Buffett was going to be there. Proceeds from the show go to benefit Mobile Baywatch, a nonprofit organization Buffett is a member of. Jimmy's mother lives in Fairhope and he recently purchased two houses there; his sister also just bought a bar just south of Fairhope called Lu Lu's. Another good sign of Buffett possiblyappearing is that Jerry Jeff Walker is playing that weekend at Pensacola's Springfest, about one hour from Fairhope. Thanks to Pat Bussey

Heard an interesting rumor today that there may be no California shows this year! I find this hard to believe but we'll just have to wait and see. Note that Irvine concert tickets have supposedly already been won in a contest earlier this year.

The CoB,O Ticket Buying Survey is over; final results are tabulated. Notable is the difference in Ticketmaster vs. other outlets (e.g. Protix) satisfaction scores as well as the majority of those who did not score tickets will turn to scalpers and ticket agencies. Thanks to all those who voted!

A series of anonymous tips reveals:

The Where Is Joe Merchant? film project is stalled. Production was to begin this summer but producer Frank Marshall and Universal Studios are being held back by a few factors, most notably money and casting has yet to be done.

While Don't Stop The Carnival is expected to run in San Diego this fall, don't expect it to hit Broadway any time soon. The length of the musical continues to be a stumbling block with investors, and Herman Wouk has yet to agree on cuts to be made.
